Net Nanny 5.5 ($38.95) - This is the newest version of the best known filtering product. There are lots of enhancements in this version, including the ability to block pop-up ads, AOL compatiblity, more flexible filtering, and individual user accounts OR 'kiosk' mode.; Also new is the ability to block file sharing services such as Kazaa and various instant messaging services. Has some basic monitoring abilities, but not nearly as detailed as actual monitoring software.
CYBERsitter 9.0 ($39.95) - CYBERsitter has won PC Magazine Editor's Choice for several years in a row. Straight and to the point, it is by far the most secure product, and the most resistant to tampering. Additionally, it has 30 different categories of content so you can adjust the filter to your specific family needs. Like Net Nanny, has some monitoring abilities. Can be set to filter out words in any POP email account as well!
KidsWatch 3.0 ($29.95) - This is an interesting product because it fills a niche. This product lets you control all aspects of your computer, in terms of which software kids can use and which software they cannot. Use it to limit the amount of time they spend on the Internet. You can choose to limit by total number of hours, only between certain hours, or a combo of both! Also, you can easily set it to let children use the computer for homework, but not Instant Messaging. Very easy to set up and use. Don't know what to pick?...
